I Quit My Job: Budgeting as a Single Parent with @clevergirlfinance

I Quit My Job: Budgeting as a Single Parent with @clevergirlfinance

Finances and Parenting!!! I got a chance to chat with Bola Onada Sokunbi of @clevergirlfinance about the challenges of single parenting and entrepreneurship along with this new sense of freedom of living in my purpose.

Things have changed over the last 3 months for me and my budget looks a lot different from when I was making six figures a year at my previous job. I used to shop at Target once a week – literally. But now, I am very intentional with my purposes and I have to pay attention to what I am spending. Recently I opened up my daughter’s savings account and this year, she wants to visit Hawaii!!!

Of all places, she wants to one of the most expensive trips yet, to the Aulani resort this year. But guess what, we have a budget and a plan for it! See how we are STILL going to save for our annual trip to Hawaii here!

As always, I love you all. Thanks for your DM’s, messages, inboxes and checking on me. The journey continues….

Me and Alani Hit The Road For Spring Break!

Me and Alani Hit The Road For Spring Break!

IMG_0641

I was in a panic last week! Spring Break just creeped up on me and I had no plans! Luckily, Alani wasn’t paying attention to the dates either until that Friday after school. “We don’t have to go to school next week Mom! So, what am I going to do?” I knew flying somewhere was not an option as Spring Break weekend calls for pretty expensive flights and I hate waited way too late. So, I googled MUST SEE PLACES IN TEXAS and Palo Duro Canyon popped up.

My eyes have never seen something so glorious! Who knew that right here in our own backyard we had a beautiful canyon?! As matter of fact, it is known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. Alani thought it would be a pretty cool trip so we booked a hotel, packed our bags and headed out on a 8 hour drive the very next day!

We played ROAD TRIP BINGO and other fun games that made time go by quickly. On our way there we stopped by Cadillac Ranch which is an art installation in Amarillo, Texas that was created back in 1974! 10 Cadillac cars buried nose-first in the ground that people can spray paint! Super fun!

Afterwards, we headed to our hotels to check-in and have a well deserved dip in the pool! The next morning we woke up around 7am (ate free breakfast at the hotel!) and started our hiking adventure. There were 3 trails to choose from. We chose the most challenging trail. The Lighthouse. A 6 mile hike total. It took us about 2 hours to get to the top. We saw a snake in a tree, hedgehog (i think) peaking out of the ground and many families hiking together. This made me smile. Especially, the little kids who were toughing it out! The final part of hike before getting up to the lighthouse was pretty steep. It was easy to slide down if you didn’t really focus. But once you made it to the top…WOW!

I will admit. I was sad to see so many people turn around and give up when they were so close. I encouraged one couple to push through. 2 hours of walking and you don’t want to see what you came here to see?! They did eventually keep going and were amazed once they reached the lighthouse. I think this was important for Alani to see too. What a great life lesson. Never give up. Life is going to be full of highs and lows, rocky roads and sometimes it gets so tough that you want to give up. But don’t quit, because something glorious is waiting for you on the other side.

Fatih Over Fear + Spring Break on a Budget!

Fatih Over Fear + Spring Break on a Budget!

Me and my daughter Alani hit the road earlier this week for Spring Break! Not having a job was not going to stop me from giving my daughter THE ultimate vacation. So, I created a tight budget and we stuck to it. For REAL! While hiking up to the lighthouse at Palo Duro Canyon, we encountered a hidden message…

Why Worrying Less About Your Kids and Drugs Isn’t Such a Bad Idea!

Why Worrying Less About Your Kids and Drugs Isn’t Such a Bad Idea!

I never thought the day would come where I wouldn’t tell my teen son or daughter to put their phone away or I’d be that parent who wouldn’t limit their amount of screen time, whether it be smartphone, tablet or computer use. They’re millennials  and there’s no getting around it. It’s a common thing to do and I just have to come to terms with it, whether I want to or not. That day has come and you might want to open your arms and accept it too.

We pay bills, set up meetings, share music, SKYPE and anything else you can think of, on our smartphones. We move about our day hardly without the use of a one. I’m pretty sure there’s an app for whatever you need to do and Matt Ritchel in ‘Are Teenagers Replacing Drugs with Smartphones?’ shares why there’s a decline in the use use of alcohol and drugs with teenagers. He says that smartphone and tablets usage has exploded over the last decade causing… read the full story here!
